Opening Concerts: Live from the Philharmonie de Paris

Jean Nouvel's Philharmonie de Paris opened in January 2015, and its superb acoustics are revealed by this, the first recording made in the visually striking concert hall. The resident Orchestre de Paris, under Paavo Järvi, offers an imaginatively varied program with the greatest of French symphonies at its heart: Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique receives a thrilling performance. Thrills of a different sort are provided by Borodin's Polovtsian Dances and Varèse's witty riff on an orchestra "Tuning Up.” Ravel's second Daphnis et Chloé Suite, with chorus, is ravishing. The program ends with the world premiere of Thierry Escaich's Concerto for Orchestra, full of magical sounds and rhythmic life.
