Whitiora

Elegant-voiced Maisey Rika combines her Maori roots with the sophistication of modern soul, singing in her native language over acoustic instruments at languid tempos. She's assisted by percussionist Michael Barker of the John Butler Trio, who adds a gently rocking touch on "Haumanu." Local legends fuel many of her lyrics; on "Tangaroa Whakamautai" she takes the voice of a sea goddess. But when she stretches her voice on the title song, which evokes Sade at her classiest, she sounds a bit like a goddess herself.
