iTunes Review

Fans of 1994’s classic rock–inspired Carnival of Light may dig how Tarantula continues to resonate with timeless tones. But faced with creative tension between frontmen Mark Gardner and Andy Bell (Gardner only cowrote one song) and a new era dawning in the U.K. (Oasis’ era, to be exact), Tarantula came out sounding a little less focused than previous Ride albums. Thankfully, all the songs still abound with Ride’s uncanny chemistry. A good handful of gems have aged quite nicely, starting with the hard-rocking opener, “Black Night Crash,” where Gardner’s and Bell’s guitars kick out call-and-response riffs while pumping their vintage guitar tones through the effect pedals of 1992’s Going Blank Again. “Walk on Water” plays like Bell was writing to compete with Oasis, unknowing that he’d later join the band before cofounding Beady Eye with Liam Gallagher. “Castle on the Hill” is a rootsy ballad that continues Bell’s lyrical fixation with Howard Hughes, while “A Trip Down Ronnie Lane” references The Faces while balancing old sounds with new ideas.

Black Nite Crash is a corker, the rest... meh

A shame they went out on this note. The band was fractured at this point, and you can clearly tell that there isn't much sense of direction with the majority of these tracks.

All that said, there are a few nuggets on the album that are worth a spin. Besides the brilliant opening track, the b-side Slave, Gardner's Deep Inside My Pocket, and Sunshine/Nowhere to run are worth a go.

2 good songs but that's it

Dead man and walk on water were the only 2 good songs on this album. Sadly this disappointing album was their swan song.

With their first records, Ride created a unique wall of sound that relied on massive, trembling distortion in the vein of My Bloody Valentine but with a simpler, more direct melodic approach. The shatteringly loud, droning neo-psychedelia the band performed was dubbed shoegazing by the British press because the bandmembers stared at the stage while they performed. Along with their initial influence, My Bloody Valentine, Ride stood apart from the shoegazing pack, primarily because of their keen sense...
