Sing Me the Songs - Celebrating the Works of Kate McGarrigle

It certainly helps Kate McGarrigle's legacy that she has two talented children—Martha and Rufus Wainwright—to keep her songs in front of people. In this case, they coordinated the proceedings alongside producer Joe Boyd and Kate's sister Anna with concerts in London, New York, and Toronto. The Lian Lunson film of the same name only covers the New York shows, while this expansive set volleys among the four nights. (Net proceeds from this album will benefit the Kate McGarrigle Foundation, a nonprofit organization that helps fight sarcoma.) The highlights are varied. Emmylou Harris performs her touching tribute "Darlin' Kate." Rufus does a take on "Southern Boys." Rufus and Martha perform together for "I Am a Diamond," and Broken Social Scene works through "Mother Mother." Jimmy Fallon, Norah Jones, and Teddy Thompson bring all they have. Richard and Linda Thompson perform together for "Go Leave," a song also given a heartbreaking spin by Antony Hegarty. The album ends with a demo of Kate at the piano singing "I Just Want to Make It Last."
