Tate Stevens

X Factor champion Tate Stevens was pushing 40 when he won in 2012, but he's been performing ever since 1994. And this may be why his 2013 eponymous solo album is partly rooted in the new traditional sound of the '90s. Keeping his other boot planted in 21st-century twang, he gets the party started with the radio-groomed “I Got This”: a modern-day country rocker replete with a catchphrase chorus, looped banjo picking, and the growl of electric guitar distortion matching his throaty baritone croon. “Can’t Get Nothing Done” harks back to the golden era of George Strait and Garth Brooks. It’s a breezy and nostalgic country song that gussies up catchy guitar pop with fiddles, Telecasters, and pedal-steel guitar notes melting all over the chorus like hot butter on a boiled ear of corn. “Power of a Love Song” proves that Stevens can belt out an amorous ballad with the best of ‘em.
