The Back-up Plan (Original Motion Picture Score)

A screwball comedy with a contemporary twist — tired of waiting for Mr. Right, bachelorette Jennifer Lopez decides on artificial insemination, then meets guess who — The Backup Plan is graced with a sprightly orchestral soundtrack by Hedwig and the Angry Inch co-creator/rising scoring star Stephen Trask. The composer deftly illuminates the film’s romance and goofy plot twists with cues that recall the similar, musically emotive palettes of Rachel Portman and Rolfe Kent, yet whose economy and good humor are all Trask’s own. Performed with a bright, focused energy and impressive range by the Northwest Sinfonia, Trask’s cues employ gentle strings, nervous rhythms and spare piano flourishes yet can pivot from the modern towards the melancholy in a heartbeat.
