Thy Kingdom Come

Thy Kingdom Come

While CeCe Winans possesses a queenly bearing and commanding vocal presence, she doesn’t flaunt her authority as she sings the Lord’s praises. Both CeCe’s power and nuance as a singer are on display throughout Thy Kingdom Come, arguably her best release since Alabaster Box. Over the years, Winans has added R&B/pop shadings to her traditional gospel approach, addressing Biblical themes in more general terms while slipping into au courant grooves. This time, she combines Sunday service dramatics with dreamy neo-soul textures while keeping her scripture-based message unambiguous. “Forever,” “It Ain’t Ova,’” and “Waging War” are roof-shaking exercises in revivalism, led by Winans in preacherly fashion. More subdued are the serene “We Welcome You (Heavenly Father),” the shimmering “Oh Holy Place,” and the billowy “Million Miles.” An acoustic Brazilian-style arrangement flavors “The Coast is Clear,” while “Worthy” adds a dash of light funk to the proceedings. Thy Kingdom Come is a work of praise and worship, but it doesn’t lose its human element in its hosannas.
