Pop Ambient 2009

As familiar as the Pop Ambient formula is — ambient music that’s much more complex and evocative than standard ‘chill-out’ fare  — the series only seems to be getting stronger with time. Case in point: the 2009 edition, which pairs a revolving door of Kompakt regulars (Andrew Thomas, Klimek, the many faces of Wolfgang Voigt, including a couple of icy Jörg Burger collaborations and the first new Mint composition in eight years) with such welcome surprises as a brief but beautiful Tim Hecker track and two neo-classical contributions from Sylvain Chauveau. None of this should be a surprise considering Pop Ambient’s longtime curator (Voigt himself, who ensured his god-like status in subterranean techno circles with Gas), yet it somehow is nine installments in. That’s probably because everything is as comforting and immaculately crafted as the blanket your grandma made you when you were five. You might fall asleep while listening, but at least you’ll have a smile on your face.
