I Believe There Is More

I Believe There Is More

Over the past two decades, the Minnesota-born singer/songwriter Don Moen helped create the template for modern pop hymnody. Others have taken the form in bolder directions, but Moen has remained vital through his commitment to simplicity and unguarded reverence, and I Believe There Is More holds true to this pattern, though a few sonic tweaks update things a bit. Moen’s cleartoned, utterly guileless vocals lend these tracks a contemplative Sunday morning feel. “Painter of the Sky,” “Grace Is Enough,” and the expansive “The Greatness of You” typify the purity and sweetness of his sound. The album’s arrangements add variety, with “I’ll Say Yes” moving to an R&B groove and “Thank God I’m Free” displaying some country-rock drive. The misty Celtic tinge hovering about “O God of Abraham” offers a particularly transporting moment. If Moen’s approach to praise music lacks the forcefulness of a Chris Tomlin or a David Crowder, it still retains an openhearted, Bible-rooted appeal. I Believe There Is More marks how far Moen has come over the years and points the way towards continued testimonies of faith in the future.
