The Playful Heart

The Playful Heart

Playful is the key word here; on this 2010 album, Robin Trower, a guitarist best known for his work in Procol Harum, takes some pleasantly unexpected turns between his usual experiments in progressive blues. He drives "The Turning" with a hard, fast riff before hitting the brakes, finishing the tune with a moody, "Layla"-esque coda. On "Camille," he becomes the lounge singer at a strange, smoky cafe, crooning to the woman of the title as a jazz beat stutters behind him.
