The Well

The Well

Memphis-born Megan Reilly sings her heart out on her emotionally riveting third album, The Well. Backed by musicians with equal verve and conviction (The Mekons' Steven Goulding, Pere Ubu's Tony Maimone, and heartland rocker James Mastro), Reilly weaves her way through a set of tunes that filter soul ("Little Angel"), guitar rock ("Sew the Threads into Your Heart"), and folk ("The Old Man & the Bird," featuring John Wesley Harding) through her countryfied vocal delivery. "The Lady of Leitrim" turns out a spooky performance, with the addition of Patti Smith Group's Lenny Kaye on lead guitar. Kaye also adds his sparkling leads to the tough country-rock of "To Seal My Love." Reilly's cover of Iris DeMent's "After You're Gone" faces down death and explores the meaning of eternal love. Her own "Throw It Out" looks at the difficulty of love gone off-course and the intense rebuilding period that must follow.
