Berkeley to Bakersfield

Berkeley to Bakersfield

Cracker’s 10th studio album (and first in five years) is a generous double album that features two distinct approaches from the band. The Berkeley album centers on the band’s classic Kerosene Hat lineup, with David Lowery, Johnny Hickman, bassist Davey Faragher, and drummer Michael Urbano settling into their twin-guitar rock mode for a loud, punkish song-oriented bash. The Bakersfield collection adds a number of guest musicians—including pedal steel guitarist Matt “Pistol” Stoessel and fiddle player Luke Moeller—for a convincing round of twang-fueled country music that eventually leads to the forlorn “When You Come Down.”
