Setting Sun is essentially the output of producer-multi-instrumentalist Gary Leavitt, who works on and off with his partner Erica Quitzow (of Quitzow) to make music that takes as many left turns as can still accommodate Leavitt’s natural accessibility. Described as “Brit-Pop,” psychedelic, techno-folk and many other odd taglines, Setting Sun do mix and match with a witty abandon. “Driving” is like a shuffling rockabilly number where the early new-wave movement shows up in a variety of swoops and swills. “Make You Feel” is the sound of an acoustic folk song being hijacked by brilliantly varied instrumentation and a sweet sway that accidentally snags a bit from Bob Seger’s “Turn the Page.” “The Tree” sounds like the Rolling Stones’ “Torn and Frayed” diced up with Pink Floyd. “Don’t Grow Up” adds Quitzow’s cello to the ensemble vocals that sound like a band of mad monks finding their way into the sunshine. “I Love Mellotrons” is a drums and acoustic guitar-based instrumental that finally pays tribute to that most ‘70s of keyboards and ends with a bit of violin.
