One Arm Train - EP

One Arm Train’s frontmen, Grant Vogelfanger and Witt McKay, aren’t biological brothers. But after hearing their congruent voices harmonize throughout the duo’s debut EP, it'd be easy to mistake them for such. This can be credited to the two friends making music together ever since they were 12; they grew up in Memphis and met at age 10. “Old Wine in a New Bottle” balances twangy tones with contemporary pop production that sounds groomed for new country radio. “Here on the Edge” pulses with tension-building rhythms and melodic arpeggios that lean harder on classic indie rock trappings. But then the chorus ushers in rootsy slide guitars and close-singing harmonies that would make Don and Phil Everly proud. In “The Truth’s Lookin’ for You,” Vogelfanger and McKay downshift into an acoustic ballad where minor guitar chords ring out forebodingly alongside weeping pedal steel notes. Their approach to balladry has more in common with '90s alt-country; it dodges the maudlin sentimentality frequently associated with modern Nashville recordings and kicks up some dust with a muscled chorus.
