To the Secrets and Knowledge

From the opening notes of the alluring and atmospheric “The Victory,” it’s evident that Number One Gun doesn’t need a gimmicky cover to make this album sail. Another thing that Number One Gun doesn't need is a band. That’s right; Jeff Schneeweis is Number One Gun. Just as on 2008’s North Pole Project, Schneeweis continues to keep this project going as chief songwriter, singer, multi-instrumentalist and producer. “Forest” is the album’s most salient standout with its feel-good emo-pop and vocals that sound heartfelt without being sappy. “Noises” deviates from the formula with a svelte minimalism that slowly builds on dynamic layers of added sounds and singing — if you’ve ever seen a musician in a live one-man-band setting with a looping effect pedal, this carries the same kind of subtly intricate architecture. “White Lies” was built on a similar foundation, but with strum ‘n’ bass accoutrements.
