Fumes

Fumes

Working again with producer Paul Mahern, Lily and Madeleine Jurkiewicz recorded their second album, Fumes, in Bloomington, Ind., writing the songs with their longtime collaborator, the experienced farmhand Kenny Childers (Gentleman Caller, Brando). Where their debut settled for a raw simplicity that led to comparisons to Sweden’s First Aid Kit, Fumes is a delicately polished gem, with grander ambitions and pop songs (“Rabbit,” “Cabin Fever,” “Peppermint Candy”) as sweet as the bubblegum pop of the ‘60s and ‘70s. For a stronger human touch, the introspective vibes of “The Wolf Is Free” and “Hold On to Now” peel away the facade of shiny, happy youth.
