Fly

Fly

Comprising members of The Cuts, Hunx And His Punx, Bare Wires and Sir Lord Von Raven, Oakland’s Time Flys were a short-lived but long-loved quartet kicking new life into old punk. Their debut album Fly emerged in 2005 sounding like 1975 right from the opening “Smokin’ Dope” where frontman Eric Johnson croons like Nick Nicholis from proto-punk band The Bizarros. “Dirt (My Best Friend)” is a catchy stand-out tune with off-the-rail six-string leads that sound like they’re trying to escape the song as guitarist Andy Human sings in an endearingly sloppy unison with Johnson. “Jailbait” slithers with the teenage lust of a MC5 song before “Anti-Depressants” explodes in a cacophonous flurry of imbalanced angst. Throughout Fly, producer Greg Ashley imports some of that vintage sounding lo-fi grit synonymous with his own band The Gris Gris, making for something that sounds authentically antiquated — like early recordings by The Gizmos — fitting perfectly with songs like “Teenage Tears,” a warbling attempt at 1950s doo-wop.
