Forgive Or Forget

Forgive Or Forget

Jenny Whiteley (pronounced “White-lee”) is a roots music practitioner who has spent the past four years putting together the emotional tug of war that is Forgive and Forget. Beginning with a cover of Felice and Boudleaux Bryant’s “Raining In My Heart,” once recorded by Buddy Holly, Forgive and Forget has that rainy day quality that demands one sit back and let the songs wash over you. Whiteley’s gorgeous vocals that could easily evoke comparisons to Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins add an extra mist to the proceedings. The pedal steel from producer Steve Dawson on “Day Without Words” shades her towards country done the Patsy Cline way. His electric guitar adds extra color to “There Was Love.” And Dawson’s productions are deliberately clean and subdued, putting Whiteley in the spotlight. “Final Season,” the fatalistic doom of “Truth and the Eyes of the Dead,” “Cold, Cold Kisses,” “Slack” and “Half Life” are chilling tunes worthy of any genre, but hit the nerve at the heart of genuine country music from any era.
