Tide

Tide

Brazilian vocalist Luciana Souza and her husband, bassist/producer Larry Klein, team up for a second time on 2009’s Tide. (The pair also collaborated on 2007’s The New Bossa Nova.) “Adeus America & Eu Quero Um Samba” contains a fusion of two songs by the Brazilian composer Haroldo Barbosa. Souza shows complete command as she gracefully darts and floats through the tune, and Romero Lubambo plays a fine acoustic guitar solo. Souza has set poetry to music before, and here she performs adaptations of two e. e. cummings poems, “Love — Poem 65” and the title cut. Gentle guitar and subtle organ nicely dapple the surface of these atmospheric pieces, both of which display the influence of Joni Mitchell. (Mitchell was previously married to and collaborated with Klein.) The uptempo “Sorriu Para Mim,” which showcases Souza’s scat work, along with the percussion of Cyro Baptista, makes for a nice contrast to those dreamy songs, while “Chuva” possesses one of the album’s lovelier melodies. Tide closes with Paul Simon’s “Amulet,” with Souza intoning a wordless melody as she is accompanied by Larry Koonse on guitar.
