Til I Was a Daddy Too - Single

The experience of fatherhood can bring out the most maudlin and mushy sentiment, even in grizzled cowboys like Tracy Lawrence. "Til I Was A Daddy Too" from his 11th studio album For The Love puts the power back in power ballad as it gushes with the kind of fatherly adoration and wide-eyed wonder that just can't be faked. It begins with scant piano notes and Lawrence's nasal inflections singing picturesque recollections of his own father's pride before the drums kick in and open up a chorus steeped in countrypolitan accoutrements with weepy honky-tonk instrumentation. "I'm Gonna Finish Leaving You" is an up-tempo B-side so catchy that you have to wonder why it didn't make the album. Lawrence sings this one with an effortless cool as the pedal steel approximates a train whistle when it's not melting mellifluous notes like butter over a song that's as catchy as Eddie Rabbitt's chorus on "Drivin' My Life Away."
