Decade

Decade

For 2012’s Decade, Mi Ami eschews slapping the echo deck and blowing the melodica for a delightful detour into old-school deep house. “Horns” opens the set sounding like a prequel to “Clubhouse” from Magic Touch’s 2011 I Can Feel the Heat single. (Magic Touch is another project from drummer Damon Palermo.) Decidedly lo-fi, Decade starts with shimmering ambience and chiming keyboards filtered through phasing effects. Then Fac 51 Haçienda-era beats, bass, and Daniel Martin-McCormick’s androgynously soulful vocals transport the listener back to a time of oversized faded denim jeans and secret map points. The following “Time of Love” is an instrumental smorgasbord of overlapped vintage keyboard tones, echo-affected handclaps, and the sort of classic club rhythms that beg to be danced to in a pair of crisp white Adidas Sambas. As the song progresses, intense space-rock sounds are layered in. “Free of Life” mellows out a bit with congas and laser blasts before “Bells” closes sounding like a late-'80s NYC underground club.
