Dark Place

New Jersey suburbanite Jessie Baylin left her parents’ house and their restaurant/bar where she performed as a teen for the world she imagined in Los Angeles. She married Kings of Leon drummer Nathan Followill and released an album for Verve. For her third album and second for Blonde Rat, she recorded and cowrote songs with Richard Swift at his studio in Cottage Grove, Ore. Swift played and arranged the music while Baylin handled all the vocals for what Baylin describes half-jokingly as “sort of like Dusty [Springfield] on Quaaludes.” Actually, it’s slightly more upbeat, displaying elements of Astrud Gilberto along with Southern soul.
