Angel Dust

Angel Dust

Since bursting onto the Houston scene in the late ‘90s, tireless underground champion Z-Ro has kept up a punishing release schedule, maintaining a backlog of studio material so impressive that his label, Rap-A-Lot, was able to cobble together no fewer than three full-lengths from them while Z-Ro served a short sentence behind bars in the mid-‘00s. Z-Ro’s work ethic has only grown since his release, and Angel Dust is his fifth album in as many years. The relentlessly grim “These Days” has been making the rounds on the mixtape circuit for about two years, while the menacing “Jaccers Wanna Know” boasts a classic, synth-laced beat that wouldn’t have sounded out of place on 2006’s I’m Still Livin’. Whenever the tracks that make up Angel Dust were recorded, they're almost uniformly excellent. H-Town veterans like Lil Flea of Street Military, Mike D, and Lil Flip all make memorable cameos, but it’s Z-Ro’s impeccable flow and incisive lyricism that make Angel Dust a cohesive and rewarding listen.
