Album Review
When Aston "Family Man" Barrett heard Elan's demo, the ears of the Wailers bassist immediately pricked up. Given Junior Marvin's departure, the Wailers needed a frontman, and Barrett was immediately convinced they'd found his replacement. One listen to Together as One's title track explains why the Wailers snapped Elan up. This glorious number's gorgeous melody, acoustic guitar-laced arrangement, and unity theme all echo of Bob Marley's own "Redemption Song." However, dancehall fans will note the track's equally striking similarities to Buju Banton's "Untold Stories." And it's this ability to beautifully blend both new and old, speaking simultaneously to young and old, that is Elan's strongest suit. "I Wanna Yell" also reverberates with a Marley-esque sound, although in this case, with its modern reggae flavor and bouncy melody, it's Stephen who springs to mind. Elsewhere, "My Kingston Girl," which resurrects an old rocksteady melody and is brushed with harmonies, recalls the Wailers' days at Studio One. "You Don't Come Around No More" also has a lovely revival feel to the riddim, but here Elan leaves the Marleys behind and strides straight into R&B-flavored dancehall, accompanied by Cutty Ranks, whose sharp toasts provide an authentic island-style feel to the number. Gwen Stefani helps take this hybrid sound into even lusher pastures on "All Nighter." Then again, Elan can handle dancehall in any of its varieties, be it the sweet singing/tough toaster combo of the reggaeton-tinged "Girl," where he's paired with Assassin, or DJing himself across the techno-flavored drum'n'bass-driven "Feel My Pressure." Intriguingly, on another combo number, "Don't You Go," dancehall surfs right into new wave, while Tami Chynn toasts up a storm on top and Elan sings out sweetly below. He rides solo on "Do Right by You," another powerful number, this time on a roots reggae riddim that's again frothing with new wave influences. It's a heady mix of sounds and styles, and with a producer roster that includes Lynford "Fatta" Marshall, Lenky Marsden, Tony Kelly, Sly & Robbie, and No Doubt's Tony Kanal, that's no surprise. Elan initially established his reputation by keeping the Wailers' songs alive, but it's evident here that he has numbers of his own that demand attention. He also has plenty to say on a variety of subjects, from romance to injustice, and with lyrics that swing from dancehall boasts to unity calls, Elan circles culture and matters of the heart with equal finesse and aplomb. Although not Jamaican — he's California born and bred — Elan is already a reggae force, but with his debut album he now strongly stamps his own imprimatur on the scene.
Customer Reviews
I am going to write a review that will actually help people.
I am hoping this review will help many of you when deciding to buy this album or not. First and foremost, Elan is not a white guy trying to do reggae music. He is a Moroccan Israeli who has been the lead singer for the legendary reggae group known as The Wailers. Now that that's out of the way, It's time to talk about the album. If you are not a reggae or dancehall fan, find something else you like and spend your money on that unless you are open minded and want to give this music a chance. For those of you who do like this kind of music, I recommend the following songs: Nothing Is Worth Losing You (Great reggae tune. A blend of old school and new school reggae. Mellow and energetic at the same time.) Girl (fun dancehall tune with energetic caribbean vibe. Soft vocals by Elan accompanied by rugged Jamaican Patois vocals by Assassin) I Wanna Yell (Old school sounding reggae that is reminiscent of Don Corleon's "Istanbul Riddim". Vocal backing by Gwen Stefani) Together As One (Dancehall ballad that reminds us of those in need and to be greatful for what we have. Acoustic guitar that is reminiscent of the Drop Leaf Riddim by Don Corleon) All Nighter (Fun dancehall tune that sounds like it should be in a No Doubt album. Amazing production combuined with outstanding vocals melodies and harmonies. Vocal duet accompanied by Gwen Stefani) You Don't Come Around No More (New school reggae with a mellow sound. Produced by Steven "Lenky" Marsden [wrote Diwali riddim and Bubble Up riddim] Soft vocals accompanied by rugged vocals by Cutty Ranks) Do Right By You (Old school reggae/dub. Mellow tune with a slight R&B flare. Similar to a later production performed by Brick & Lace called "Buss A Shot" produced by Will I Am.) Don't You Go (Dancehall tune with a No Doubt flare. Great musical and vocal production. Fun tune about meeting someone you like at a club. Mellow vocals by Elan accompanied by Rough Ragga Rastafari Woman vocals by Tami Chynn [Hyperventilating, Over And Over Again, Frozen feat. Akon] The best tune in the entire album in my oppinion.)
Dont let his music pass you by...
if u love reggae, then you'll love elan! His voice is amazing, and he'll keep you swaying all night long.
Elan is a MUST to any reggae lover. AMAZING!! <3
I was introduced to Elan about 2 years ago, under the impression that his songs were actually old hardly played Bob Marley songs. Mistaken as i was, Elan became my obsession for music. He started me into liking reggae. His songs are amazing, crowd starters, get-cha-going songs. This guy has serious tallent, expecially since he's part of the Wailers. He has an amazing stage presence and when you listen or even see him preform you know he's one of those artist who is humble, yet is so passionate about the words he sings. I cant even pick a song out from his ablum Together As One that i would call my favorite, they all have their unique qualities for any day you might be feeling. If your feeling mello, Together as One, if your looking to get up and dance, Nothing is Worth Losing You, looking for a duet..two also amazing girls he sings with Gwen Stefani and Tami Chynn. This album is worth the cost! <3 Elan!! <3
