The Orchard

The Orchard

This quintet of musicians based in Portland, Maine falls into a narrow niche one might call “Gothic folk,” where the likes of Matt Bauer and Will Oldham dwell. The band once made noisy, arty music as Cerberus Shoal but now it kicks up a squall of a different kind. Using instruments like dobro, accordion, harmonium (similar to a pump organ), oud (cousin to the lute), and doumbek and djembe (Middle Eastern drums), Fire On Fire’s strummed guitars and plucked banjos create a dark, literary landscape where everything feels a bit woozy, like it’s slowly unraveling. "Even the worst of man has friends/even the hangman has friends...” “Chalk scrapes out the shapes of our bodies/ the crows move faster than we can see,” so rasps one of the male players, countered occasionally with lone femme Colleen Kinsella, whose voice yearns to be “pretty” but is usually tempered with a sheen of either sour or sorrow; the exception is “Grin,” where even the music soars to a place of light. But don’t worry, it’s not all mournful, No Depression territory. There is plenty of raw, organic beauty in these artists and their eclectic array of instruments. Just think of it as American music that’s more moonshine than apple pie.
