Bareback at Big Sky (Live)

Musical commitment, a loyal fan base, and sheer tenacity have kept Poco going for nearly 40 years. Bareback at Big Sky captures them in vital form at a 2005 concert in Bozeman, Montana where long-time band mates Rusty Young and Paul Cotton receive able support from bassist Jack Sundrud and percussionist George Lawrence throughout this acoustic-oriented set. From Poco’s earlier days come such favorites as the Latin-inflected “Too Many Nights Too Long” and the galloping “Under the Gun.” More recent compositions like “Nothing Less Than Love” and “Bareback” rekindle the yearning romanticism of the band’s best work. “Barbados” simmers to a gentle island groove, while their treatment of J.J. Cale’s “Cajun Mood” adds a funky undercurrent. An unexpected cover of Neil Young’s Buffalo Springfield-era tune “On the Way Home” shows off the group’s impeccable harmonies. Poco deserves credit for influencing everyone from the Eagles to Restless Heart and Lonestar. On their own, they’re still capable of delivering aching ballads and spirited rockers with a Western twist, as Bareback at Big Sky shows.
