Incredibly, five of Miles Davis' most exciting albums—Miles, Cookin', Relaxin', Workin', and Steamin'—were recorded over just three days in 1955 and '56, capturing Miles' first great quintet in full bloom. The simmering stroll "Just Squeeze Me," propelled by Paul Chambers' booming ballast, shows the band's light-swinging mastery. John Coltrane's questing sax lines on the breakneck bebop "Half Nelson" reveal the power under the hood. A muted, melancholy solo on a moody "'Round Midnight" shows off the elegant grace of Davis' beautifully restrained tone.
