Love GB, but this isn't quite them...

Let me start off by saying I've been a huge, loyal supporter of Gogol Bordello for years now. I've been to a number of their shows, and I'm in love with Eugene Hutz. I thought this band could do no wrong.

That said, I'm not too crazy about the direction Rubin helped them take with this album. Is the music bad? Well, no, not exactly. Actually, if this is your first introduction to Gogol Bordello, then I'm sure it's quite nice. But I don't feel like this album lives up to the band, in any way at all. It feels like the "punk" nature, the passion and the aggression, is just missing. I think I've pinpointed why I feel that way, too. First off, there's something weird going on with the mixing of the tracks. It's like all the focus has been forcefully shifted to Eugene's vocals (his voice overshadows the music in this album). Maybe that's a marketing thing; maybe the people putting this album together (helmed by Rubin) saw the fans' love for Eugene and figured "that must be why they like this band." I don't know. I know, though, that I didn't fall in love with this band because of Hutz. I certainly love him now, but that doesn't mean I only want to hear his vocals and not more of the amazing band behind him.

Perhaps my expectations were too high. I didn't think that'd be possible with this fantastic ensemble, but I feel let down. Not necessarily by GB, but the direction their new producer has taken them.

Gypsy Punk Adds More Flavor.

Gogol Bordello are back with more of the same raw Gypsy Punk that most of you have come to love. But this time, they threw a little twist in there. You can still have your Wanderlust while wearing Purple, but you'll do it with some influences that you may not have previously heard by Mr. Hutz and his band of frolicing, partying, world-loving, beautiful weirdos. Trans-Continental Hustle is slicker and more produced than all of Gogol's other offerings, but rather than detracting from the beauty of the Bordello's typical rawness, it enhances it. T-C Hustle is like going to a world cuisine festival and trying a little of everything and loving it all. Do yourself a favor and buy this album. Then play it for your friends.

Troubled Friend

I have to agree completely with what Jade Heron wrote - Gogol Bordello seems to be taking a different turn with this new album. Even before I heard any of the new songs I saw what the cover looked like (Just Eugene looking cool) and began to have some doubts. The music on this album reflects the cover pretty well -- Eugene has become the center of attention much more than on any of Gogol's previous albums. I know he is the captain of the boat, but what makes this band truly great are the amazing contributions of the other band members, and they seem to have taken a back seat under the direction of Rubin. I've seen them live and think that they are still the same Gogol that I've known for the past few years, but this album is definitely less unique than their previous work.

That being said, there are still some pretty good songs on here, but there is nothing that can compare to their earlier master pieces.

Biography

Formed: New York, NY

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Combining elements of punk, Gypsy music, and Brecht-ian cabaret, Gogol Bordello tell the story of New York's immigrant diaspora through debauchery, humor, and surreal costumes. Leader and singer Eugene Hütz's taste in music was spun out of black market tapes of the Birthday Party and Einstürzande Neubauten in his native Ukraine. After being evacuated to western Ukraine in 1986 following the Chernobyl disaster, Hütz became enamored of the mystical, outsider qualities of Gypsy music. Living as a refugee...
