Parasols and Pekingese

Long before the great ukulele revival of the 21st century, Berkeley, California’s Tippy Canoe and her band the Paddlemen were strumming and singing catchy tunes that rest somewhere between Tin Pan Alley and the kind of kitschy little ditties perfect for Polyesian-themed parties. Tippy’s real name is Michele Kappel and she used to play drums for East Bay punk-pop female trio the Kirby Grips. A band whose melodies seep into the opening song “Mass Transmissions” before “Reel After Reel” takes a more slow and sultry approach with waltzing rhythms and Kappel singing flirtatiously in a come-hither tone. Similarly, “Sleep, Sleep My Dear” is a slow-burning number where spooky strings and a tremolo-affected guitar accompany Kappel’s elongated inflections to make for a slightly sinister-sounding lullaby. “Nut Butter Baby” smoothly segues into some bouncy Americana roots rock with some tasteful Telecaster picking and cooing background vocals while a wonky old Farfisa organ gives “Champs Elysee” a slight ‘60s garage-rock feel.
