The enigma that was Lee Hazlewood prematurely announced his retirement as the British Invasion altered the course of the '60s. Yet by 1968, he'd scored successes with Nancy Sinatra and formed Lee Hazlewood Industries, which released his finest solo work and his productions with other artists. This is the first volume in a projected series, and it features sterling examples of his unique style. "Califia (Stone Rider)" cruises with a mix of orchestrated pop and country influences. "The Bed," like much of the material, centers on his unsettling baritone, which evokes the territory between Johnny Cash and Leonard Cohen. "The Night Before" simmers with an understated intensity. "No Train to Stockholm" works its magic with a singular organ and plodding bass guitar. Suzi Jane Hokom, Ann-Margret, and Nina Lizell add counterpoints to Hazlewood's playful bravado. This set includes cuts from his legendary Cowboy in Sweden album (Hazlewood had relocated there), the unreleased track "I Just Learned to Run," and remastering from the original master tapes.
