Dorrough Music

Dorrough Music

Dorwin Demarcus Dorrough hails from Dallas, and his independent label debut, Dorrough Music, aims to nudge that often-overlooked Texas city into the national rap consciousness. There has been, and always will be, a place in the world for what old-timers call “Saturday night music,” and Dorrough Music fills that niche quite nicely. A former student of Prairie View A&M, Dorrough is in touch with the pastimes of today’s youth: cars, clothes and girls. “Ice Cream Paint Job” features catchy hooks and off the wall similes (“Paint shine like lip gloss / Cadillac got a wide body like Rick Ross”), while “Trunk Bang” features a wonderfully woozy, clanging beat, and those small pleasures are enough to make great Southern rap car songs. The heft of “She Ain’t Got It All” and “Piece & Chain Swangin’” is emphasized by the appearance of two Houston heavyweights. Even within his territory, Dorrough finds variety. “Walk That Walk” and “Wired to the T” inhabit the space midway between rap and club music, but “Wired” is outlandish and uptempo, and “Walk” reduces the beat to a minimalist pulse.
