Because Australia was the birthplace of The Birthday Party, the punk scene down under had firsthand knowledge of constructing truly freeform music. The challenge, of course, was figuring out ways of taking the music even further. Future Dirty Three member Mick Turner had worked with the incredibly intense vocalist Dugald McKenzie as Sick Things, while Jim White—another future 1/3 of The Dirty Three—had played with People with Chairs up Their Noses and The Feral Dinosaurs. Here, along with bassist Alan Secher-Jensen, they became Venom P. Stinger. The group’s complete output with the original band (two albums, a 7”, and a 12”) is collected here and lives up to its manic reputation. Most songs break past conventional structure, throwing mad-dash guitar lines into drums that shred like an industrial fan, all while McKenzie careens off-key into an offensive yell. “Flourish Wish” churns with a sense of order and purpose. “Walking Around” focuses like a good noise-punk single should, and the later recordings boost the fidelity. It's a lost treasure for fans of extreme music.
