Wish

Wish

When Tim Cohen isn’t busy with The Fresh & Onlys, Magic Trick, or fatherhood, the bearded bard of the Barbary Coast plays and records in the band Window Twins with Exray's Jon Bernson. Window Twins' 2012 sophomore album, Wish, is a lazy and lo-fi–sounding outing, with breezy songs trimmed in the classic tones of vintage gear. “Two Left Feet” opens with a jam that’s so loose and groovy it sounds like an indie rocker’s take on Bob Dylan and The Band’s Basement Tapes. “Thunder and Lightning” follows, with a similarly disjointed boogie; Cohen sounds like he’s sleepily singing though a soupy mix of reverb and Nyquil. The ramshackle percussion in “Don’t Let Me Down” gives the tune a skip-along rhythm, a nice contrast to the post-punk–flavored dub accoutrements that add a spacy vibe. The drums shift to a forward-marching style in “The Sky Is Black,” which sounds like One Foot in the Grave–era Beck singing over a beat borrowed from Björk’s “Human Behaviour.” The closing “Good People” flirts with '80s goth.
