I'm Goin' Out Lika Soldier

Willie D’s choice of weapon was anger, plain and simple. He shouted every rap like a man warning you to get off his property, and because he always refused to edit his street language for the mainstream, his solo records now seem much less dated than their contemporaries. I’m Goin’ Out Lika Soldier was released in the wake of the Geto Boys’ chart success, but it's only slightly more polished than Willie’s gloriously crude 1989 debut, Controversy. The opening title song is purely infernal, a riot-starter equal to NWA’s “100 Miles and Runnin’” or Public Enemy’s “Wecome to the Terrordome.” America was never more afraid of rappers than it was in 1992, but Willie’s song made almost everyone else look tame by comparison. A statement of uncompromised anger, “F**k Rodney King” refuses to bow to any pacifists, whether black or white. Regardless of how ignorant his rhymes seemed to be, Willie always articulated his views with total conviction and absolutely no self-editing. He is one of the few rappers able live up to the crushing funk beats of “Pass The Piote,” “Die” and “My Alibi.”
