Bouncing back from the loss of band members Brian White and Cory La Quay, the post-hardcore unit A Skylit Drive revisit their 2013 album Rise from an unplugged perspective. Rise: Ascension reveals subtleties in tunes that the previous album only hinted at. Michael Jagmin makes full use of his exceptional vocal range on “Said & Done,” “I, Enemy,” and similarly angst-drenched rockers. Nick Miller’s deft acoustic guitar work ranges from the delicate (“Just Stay”) to the driving (“Unbreakable”), accented by well-tailored string arrangements. For even longtime fans of the band, Rise: Ascension is an impressive revelation.
