We Still Love Our Country

We Still Love Our Country

This eight-track collection of primarily classic country covers is a rewarding way to meet up with Austin fiddler Carrie Rodriguez and guitarist Ben Kyle of the Minnesota group Romantica. Rodriguez becomes Emmylou Harris to Kyle’s Gram Parsons on Felice and Boudleaux Bryant’s “Love Hurts.” Townes Van Zandt’s much- covered “If I Needed You” once again proves durable and timeless as its deceptively simple verses coalesce around an unforgettable chorus. John Prine’s “Unwed Fathers” has a dark humor and a caustic societal observation that undercoats the stark and lovely tune. The original, “Fire Alarm,” is similar to Prine’s duet with Iris DeMent, “In Spite of Ourselves,” where a list of complaints is filed on both sides of the romantic divide. “Your Lonely Heart” admits a little pop bounce to its country step, but overall things are kept to upright bass, acoustic guitar, fiddle, pedal steel and some light drumming to keep things pure country and to keep the spotlight on the sterling vocal performances.
