Jigsaw Heart

Jigsaw Heart

Pianist Eden Brent got her education from University of North Texas College of Music, but she got her schooling during a 16-year stint under the tutelage of local bluesman Boogaloo Ames from her hometown of Greenville, Miss. The pianist can boogie-woogie like Jerry Lee Lewis when she roars through tunes like “Everybody Already Knows” and “Locomotive.” But there’s also a streak of vulnerability in country ballads like “The Last Time” and “Get the Hell Out of Dodge.” Moreover, she tackles the blues on the jumpin’ “Let’s Go Ahead and Fall in Love” and the ballad “Tendin’ to a Broken Heart.” She has a husky voice with a lived-in rasp; Brent’s vocals have never sounded more honest than on “Panther Burn,” where hard miles of late nights and smoky bars give the song real gravity. While half of this material is written by Brent (with the rest coming out of roots music), she pulls a fast one with Joan Armatrading’s “Opportunity,” putting a snaky gospel-blues groove on it. If you're seeking a perfect mix of roots, craft, and soul, you’ve come to the right place.
