Baba Java EP

Baba Java EP

Futurebirds celebrate a bit of coffee synchronicity here, having launched a line of coffee (called Baba Java, of course) with Jittery Joe’s ever-expanding coffeehouse empire. (Like the band, that company began in Athens, Ga.) This EP features two outtakes from the band’s Baba Yaga sessions, alongside a demo of “Virginia Slims,” that album’s opening track, and a live version of R.E.M.’s “(Don’t Go Back To) Rockville.” “Power of the V” is a nicely textured track, while “Heart Attack Blues” goes for the guttural electric guitar riff. For anyone just getting acquainted with one of Athens’ best new bands, this EP is a worthy sampler. The Baba Yaga album itself deserves a full listen as well.
