Wait Till You See Her

On Wait Till You See Her, the John Abercombie Quartet creates chamber jazz marked by rhythmic flexibility and lyrical melodies. The band — Abercrombie on guitar, violinist Mark Feldman, the young bassist Thomas Morgan, and drummer Joey Baron — has a sound that's both refined and open. “Sad Song,” establishes the album’s general flavor — delicate brushwork and sweet-toned bass serve as accompaniment to Abercrombie and Feldman’s carefully etched improvisations. (Morgan’s solo on the track is a study in less-is-more.) The brisker “Line-Up” effectively integrates rhythmically driving passages with more abstract, fractured parts. Feldman sits out “Trio,” which finds the other players swinging in an appealingly light and airy way. The title cut, written by Rodgers & Hart, is the only piece here not penned by Abercrombie. The group plays the song at a very slow tempo, savoring every tone and hit as they make their way through the 1942 gem. “Chic of Araby,” with its softly splashing cymbals and rumbling drums backing up Middle Eastern-flavored explorations, closes the album.
