Sun Airway, Craft Spells, Animal Collective, MGMT ... the similarities come easily when listening to the Bay Area duo Painted Palms spin out their shimmering, golden pop tunes. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. If you’re capable of creating beautiful, glittering baubles that uplift the spirit and inspire the feet with bouncy synth notes, jangling bells, and handclaps for days, we say, do it! This debut may have folks swaying and dancing—especially to the stellar opener, “All of Us.” Reese Donahue and Christopher Prudhomme clearly have a grasp of solid indie-pop construction, and Donahue’s vocals—though extraordinarily Panda Bear-ish at moments—lend an immediate likability to their music. For live shows, they beef up to a five-piece band. Considering they're young upstarts, the masterful craft shown here promises that the two are highly capable of directing the show. It'll be interesting to watch Painted Palms grow with both more studio and band time under their belts.
