Delaney & Bonnie Bramlett never became as successful as the friends they played with (Eric Clapton, Gram Parsons, George Harrison, Duane Allman, etc). But in their heyday, this husband and wife duo brewed a hearty rue of gospel, country, blues, soul and rock 'n' roll to birth an uncommon amalgam that couldn't be matched. For the newcomer, 1969's Home is a great place to begin. The fact that it was their only album on Stax made it possible for them to record with members of Booker T. & The MG's. The label also invited A-list tunesmiths to the party like Isaac Hayes, Steve Cropper and David Porter. Add Leon Russell on keys, Carl Radle on bass and Home is easily the most soulful album in Delaney & Bonnie's discography. Their version of "Piece of My Heart" may not boast the wailing vocal gymnastics that Janis Joplin gave it a year prior, but this one sounds so steeped in the greasy grit of Southern soul that it's hard to believe it was fronted by a couple of Caucasian hippies. This bonus track version of Home boasts the definitive take of "Get Ourselves Together" and "Pour Your Love On Me" best exemplifies the duo's stellar harmonic chemistry.
