The New Bye & Bye: Four New Songs Plus the Best Of the Train Wreck Years

The New Bye & Bye: Four New Songs Plus the Best Of the Train Wreck Years

Chip Taylor, the author of the ‘60s hits “Wild Thing” and “Angel of the Morning,” was readying a comeback when he heard violinist Carrie Rodriguez jamming out on fiddle during a South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas back in 2002. The two made plans to record together and for several years released studio records and a live album that showcased their unarguable chemistry. Rodriguez has gone on to a solo career and Taylor continues to record as well. While assembling this “Best Of” collection, Taylor invited Rodriguez to work up a few new tunes and the result opens the album. “Your Name Is On My Lips” sounds like a timeless country classic. “On An Island” is a lonely romantic waltz. “Play It Again Sam” trades vocals between the two with a gentle empathy that’s as good as their best. “The New Bye & Bye” is a bluesy-country tune where the singers play off one another’s emotions. The remaining classic cuts from their various albums make for a balanced introduction. But it’s extremely difficult to limit their work to even this generous collection.
