Ocean

Ocean

Fans of Bebo Norman’s early work will find Ocean an impressive return to form by this always-thoughtful Christian singer/songwriter. Norman’s great strength is to present sweeping spiritual themes in everyday terms, a talent he very much displays in these songs. While not completely circling back to the folk-based sound of his indie days, Ocean does invoke some of the confessional intimacy found on his first few releases. The contemplative acoustic ambiance of “Could You Ever Look At Me” and “In the Middle” feature lyrics at once vulnerable and deeply reverent. With the help of producer Jason Ingram, Norman offers such uplifting radio-friendly anthems as “Here Goes,” “I Hope You See Jesus” and the title tune. The modern-day hymn “God Of My Everything” frames his supple tenor with stark piano lines. Overall, Ocean excels in portraying human brokenness and need as it combines a compassionate message with heartfelt words of praise. Ocean recalls Norman's initial charm and passion while offering music very much in today’s Christian pop/rock mainstream.
