Meshell Ndegeocello’s ninth release burns with a quiet fire. Emotionally charged and sonically rich, Weather is an intimate recording supported by complex arrangements that ride along with her elastic bass playing and powerful, versatile voice. She sounds vulnerable and raw on the heartrending piano ballad “Oyster,” defiant on “Rapid Fire,” and sultry on “Crazy and Wild” and the title track. Slowing the tempo to a crawl, she smolders through the sparse and haunting “Objects in Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear” and “Feeling for the Wall,” as if struggling to contain her emotions. “Dirty World” and “Dead End,” two soulful uptempo numbers, offer relief from the album’s dark undercurrent, as does a tender cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Chelsea Hotel.” Produced by Joe Henry, the album is a study in control and subtlety as it finds a perfect pitch between the experimental and pop-oriented sides of her musical personality.

An artists journey

Popular music and consumerism has conditioned us to believe that we should get what we expect from artists. Top 40 and radio programming has done everything to reinforce this attitude...and according to some here...Me'shell should be a reflection of what we want and what we're comfortable hearing. "Forget where you come from and dance..."
If the journey that we hear is harsh, sad, and dark...let's take comfort in the fact that someone other than ourselves has been brave enough to have taken it and has recounted it in such beauty and honesty.

Disappointed Once Again.....

I have to be honest here. I am a huge fan of her work. But the problem is the direction she's taken again, with another disappointing album. I used to live for an album where she would have funk, tight melodies, intricate arrangements like "Priorties 1-6", "Earth", "If That's Your Boyfriend - (Tiramisu Mix)". The whole album of Peace Beyond Passion with funk gems of "Deuteronomy", "Mary Magdalene", "Stay" and the ever challenging song called "The Way". I miss the days of her creative passion, which now is replaced by someber arrangements, lackluster melodies and just uninteresting music. Meshell, I hope you come back to the passion that was you which had me anxious of getting an album from you again. When I see an album release, I feel disappointment, and the anxiety that I used to feel is now replaced with fear. Please Me'Shell, come back home!!!!! Your true fans need you and the funk of true black music to come alive again!!!!
