Just Like Honey

Just Like Honey

Though Lisa Biales sings the blues, she does so with a cheery optimism that makes her songs sound like they've emerged from a jukejoint rather than a recording studio or a lonely apartment on the wrong side of town. Biales wrote or cowrote three cuts here, including the upbeat "Gypsy Woman Blues" with producer E.G. Kight. Memphis Minnie's "Call the Fire Wagon" floats between blues and country. Its shuffling ease includes a fiddle solo that sounds like she's been listening long and hard to Hank Williams Sr. in her spare time. The title track's electric piano adds to that rare moment when Biales reflects on the lyrics' sorrow. J. Mayo Williams' "Yonder Comes the Blues" features solid slide guitar. Versions of Bonnie Raitt's "Give It Up" and Etta James' "Damn Your Eyes" are confident covers of Biales' obvious heroes. She knows her history, giving voice to the Delmore Brothers classic "Blues Stay Away from Me."
