Electric Endicott

Electric Endicott

Do-It-Yourself underground legend Gary Wilson (whose overlooked 1977 classic, You Think You Really Know Me, was reissued in 2002 to a new generation of accolades) once again plays all the instruments on 2010’s Electric Endicott. It’s an album of obsessive wonder. Fourteen tracks in 32 minutes concerning the ex-girlfriends in his life set to music that squirms around jazz-rock, lounge music and Frank Zappa-inspired pop music. “Please Don’t Break My Heart Today” could be a Harry Nilsson outtake pulled off by Zappa, while “Secret Girl” sounds like Travis Bickle of Taxi Driver finding his way into the nightclub. “Where Did My Duck Go?” is so delightfully weird that its split falsetto and baritone vocals make it all the more formidable. Some cuts are closer to the minute mark and they serve as bizarre breathers on an album that’s already skittering over the line. “Lisa Made Me Cry” is the sound of a man with his mind caught in a fan, while “Kathy Kissed Me Last Night” is a somber piano instrumental.
