Storefront Hitchcock: Music from the Jonathan Demme Picture

Storefront Hitchcock: Music from the Jonathan Demme Picture

Some of Robyn Hitchcock's finest work has come in solo or near-solo form; Storefront Hitchcock, the album souvenir of his Jonathan Demme-directed performance movie, is the latter. (Guitarist Tim Keegan and violinist Deni Bonet make appearances.) Here, the loopy imaginings of Hitchcock's lyrics and between-song musings are put to a more straightforward use. "Where Do You Go When You Die?" addresses a question he's made play of in song, but which in this case is treated with more of the serio-comedy of a Warren Zevon. Hitchcock also tackles Jimi Hendrix' "The Wind Cries Mary," reminding his audience of the song's poetry. There's plenty poetry of his own, too, some of it in the brio with which he invests this gig.
