Sun Shine
How much soft, squishy electro-pop you need is completely up to you. I run the gamut from loving The Postal Service (jumpy, catchy, Ben Gibbard) and the gay-friendly, little known Plushgun to selectively enjoying Owl City (sounds like The Postal Service, way more twee). Anoraak—the nom d’electro of French DJ/producer Frédéric Rivière—is less saccharine than Owl City and nearly as hooky as The Postal Service on the debut Wherever the Sun Sets. The settings are the usual plush bed of synthesizers and thin beats buoying up delicate vocals, but there’s a darkness beneath the light melodies that balances the sweet with the bitter. “Don’t Be Afraid”—featuring one of my least favorite Swedish vocalists, Sally Shapiro—is a gorgeously floating, easy-grooving example of what Anoraak does best, which is offer a languorous vibe cut with the slightest tinge of discomfort. “You Taste Like Cherry” has ‘80s pop-and-bounce frothiness down pat with a sweet overlay of simple funk guitar. And “Cloud Rain Love” could be Depeche Mode fronted by a twee-voiced replicant. Best of all may be the wordless “Midnight Sunset”—six minutes of ambient noodling that’s as dark and beautiful and inspiring as its title.
Hell yes
This album slams! Love "Can't Stop" and "Cloud Rain Love" the best, but the entire album is great. Merci beaucoup!!
