Chase the Sun

Chase the Sun

Impressive in spots, this eclectic release offers some intriguing hybrids of country, bluegrass, rock and soul elements. Lawson’s assets include a forceful vocal style suitable for both brash rock tracks (“Who’s Your Daddy”) and vigorous Nashville-style workouts (“Bad Bad Bad”). His ballads get a little overwrought, as evidenced by the over-the-top “Goodbye on a Bad Day,” but he shows a willingness to experiment by giving Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On” a sparkling (and surprisingly effective) bluegrass makeover. Rounding out Chase the Sun’s stylistic meanderings are country mood pieces like the title tune and R&B-styled numbers like “Are You Happy Now” and “Superstar.” Lawson’s desire to test musical limits is admirable; his songwriting displays a heartland sort of earthiness and touches of humor.
