Barrington Levy has been a formidable vocal presence in reggae and dancehall since the mid-’70s, but in King Tubby’s hands, his soulful singing is a ghost-like presence, dancing around Tubby’s dub arrangements and leaving plenty of room for the rhythm to do its work. On “Shaolin Temple Dub,” Tubby makes his drums clang like ball bearings in a grain silo, while “Black Heart Man Dub” contrasts Levy’s heartfelt voice with pitched-up bells that tingle the senses.
